UGento – The search for Francesco Monda, the 78-year-old tourist from Campania who disappeared on July 30 in the waters of Capo di Leuca, between Pescoluse and Torre Vado, ended in tragedy.
The lifeless body of the man, a resident of Marigliano, was spotted today from a passing boat off the coast of Torre San Giovanni, a marina in Ugento. Monda, on vacation in Pescoluse, had entered the sea on the morning of July 30th for a swim, but had not returned.
The alarm was raised by his daughter, concerned about her father's absence. Search operations were launched immediately, coordinated by the Port Authority and the Guardia di Finanza, with the support of Italian Air Force aircraft and the Fire Brigade's underwater unit.
Despite the impressive equipment deployed, hopes of finding the elderly man alive faded as the hours passed. The discovery of the body, which occurred not far from the coast, puts an end to a story that had kept the local community and the tourist's family in suspense.
Authorities are now investigating the cause of death, which is likely related to illness or sea conditions. The tragedy raises concerns about safety at sea, especially for the elderly, in one of Salento's most popular seaside resorts.

It's very sad that something like this happened; it's unthinkable that a 78-year-old could drown while swimming. I hope the authorities will conduct the necessary investigations to understand what really happened to Francesco Monda.
