Napoli – "The data released by Justice Minister Carlo Nordio on the number of prison suicides are not a 'counter-narrative' effort, but simply a snapshot of historical reality. Like it or not, it's exactly as the Minister of Justice portrayed it."
This is what Donato Capece, general secretary of the autonomous penitentiary police union, said (Know), intervening in the controversy that arose following the minister's statements.
“Every death in prison is a defeat for the State,” Capece adds, “and it is always painful for those who work in penitentiary institutions to find themselves faced with such tragedies.
Mental distress and the risk of suicide among prisoners remain a true national emergency, regardless of who governs: right, left, center, or technical governments. Unfortunately, suicides have also occurred under other Prisoners' Ombudsmen, but no one was shocked back then.
The SAPPE leader also emphasizes the operational challenges facing the staff: "The Penitentiary Police work with dedication and professionalism, but often in isolation and without adequate tools to manage such complex situations. We appreciate the government's interventions, both in terms of new hires and regulatory changes that have strengthened the operations of the Baschi Azzurri."
