UA sudden collapse nearly caused a tragedy. This is what happened late this morning inside the 118 emergency station in Torre Annunziata, where the false ceiling of the room reserved for the doctor on duty suddenly collapsed.
Only by chance did the professional manage to save himself a few moments before part of the attic collapsed to the ground.
The alarm was raised by the association "Nessuno tocchi Ippocrate," which shared images of the disaster on its social media channels. According to reports, the doctor heard strange creaking sounds coming from the ceiling and, suspicious, decided to leave the room.
A decision that proved providential: shortly thereafter, in fact, the structure gave way, partially collapsing onto the area intended for the rest of the healthcare workers.
A tragedy avoided, but only by chance
The 118 station is located in a building long-reported for serious structural deficiencies. This isn't the first time that critical issues have emerged regarding the condition of the premises where emergency crews operate.
Following the collapse, the structure was immediately evacuated and the area cordoned off. Firefighters, municipal technicians, and law enforcement officers responded to the scene, investigating the causes of the collapse and, more importantly, assessing the stability of the entire building.
Meanwhile, to ensure service continuity, the station's operations were temporarily relocated. This emergency intervention prevented the interruption of rescue operations in the area.
Operators raise alarm: "We're working in unacceptable conditions."
The incident refocuses attention on the conditions in which 118 emergency medical services often operate in Campania. "We've been reporting the critical issues with these facilities for some time, but we've been ignored," the association denounces. Nobody touches Hippocrates, which has been fighting for the protection of healthcare workers for years.
"This isn't an isolated case. This time it went well, but next time you might not have time to escape from a room that's collapsing around you."
Investigations to determine any liability are ongoing, but the problem is now structural. Ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of the operational headquarters appears to be completely inadequate, with staff often forced to work in risky conditions, in obsolete and poorly maintained buildings.
A matter of public safety
The Torre Annunziata accident cannot be dismissed as a fluke: it is a clear symptom of a system that is leaking from all sides. Healthcare workers, already subjected to heavy workloads, must be able to rely on safe, functional, and dignified environments.
What happened today is yet another wake-up call: it's time for local and regional institutions to urgently address the safety of healthcare facilities, before the irreparable happens.

It's incredible how often these types of situations happen; it seems no one takes operators' reports seriously. Safety is paramount and must be guaranteed to prevent incidents like this, which could have been much more serious.
