Naples: Police raid Piazza Garibaldi: 4 arrests and 34 illegal immigrants identified.

An extraordinary operation with approximately 200 State Police officers working in Piazza Garibaldi, the Vasto district, and surrounding areas.

This is the outcome of the operation ordered by the Naples Police Headquarters during the week, aimed at strengthening control of the territory and countering the aiding and abetting of illegal immigration, predatory crimes and widespread situations of illegality in the area.

A widespread presence, concentrated in a strategic hub of the city, crossed every day by thousands of commuters, tourists, workers, and residents. Piazza Garibaldi, with the central station, bus terminal, subway, and numerous hospitality and commercial establishments, remains one of the most sensitive areas in terms of public order and urban security.

Two hundred operators in the field

Officers from the Flying Squad, the Office of General Prevention and Public Rescue, the Immigration Office, and the Vasto-Arenaccia, Vicaria-Mercato, Scampia, Secondigliano, Arenella, Vomero, Posillipo, Ponticelli, and Poggioreale police stations took part in the operation.

The operation was carried out with the support of the Campania Crime Prevention Unit and the Mobile Unit. A significant deployment of forces, with checks distributed throughout the streets and busiest areas of the neighborhood, aimed at identifying irregular presences and preventing incidents of petty crime.

150 people identified, 34 of them illegal immigrants

During the operation, approximately 150 people were identified. Of these, 34 were found to be illegal immigrants in the country.

One of the foreigners checked was ordered to be taken to a repatriation detention center. Two minors were placed in a foster home. Nine other people were ordered to be taken to the border, a measure that must be validated by the competent judicial authority.

Two other individuals were issued orders to leave the country. A further search led to the identification of a person subject to an international arrest warrant for a murder committed in Italy in 2010.

Four arrests and a minor reported

Four people were arrested during the operations. A 21-year-old woman was arrested, charged with unlawful possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and possession of an unlicensed weapon. A minor was also charged with the same offenses.

A 51-year-old man, already known to law enforcement, was also arrested and charged with evading arrest, resisting arrest, damaging public property, and theft by sleight of hand.
A 31-year-old man, with a criminal record, was arrested for possession of drugs with intent to sell. Finally, a 32-year-old man was arrested on charges of evading arrest and providing false information to a public official.

An operation eagerly awaited by residents and traders

The Police Headquarters' intervention is particularly important in an area that has long been calling for greater attention. Residents and business owners in Piazza Garibaldi and the Vasto area frequently report problems related to the presence of individuals engaged in illegal activities, incidents of pickpocketing and theft, the deterioration of some streets, and the difficulty of working or traveling peacefully during certain hours.

The operation cannot be interpreted solely through the numbers of identified individuals, arrests, or administrative measures. The value of the activity also lies in the visibility of the state presence, the ability to intervene in a coordinated manner, and the preventative function exercised by constant and identifiable controls.

For an area with a strong commercial, tourist, and transit vocation like the central station, safety is also crucial from an economic perspective. Restoring the trust of those who live and work in the neighborhood means protecting businesses, promoting the use of public spaces, and countering the risk of illegal situations becoming part of the urban norm.

The knot of continuity

The demand from the local community is to transform extraordinary interventions into a regular, coordinated presence. High-impact raids allow us to address immediate situations and send a clear message, but residents and business owners expect, above all, continuity: daily checks, prevention, monitoring of reports, and integrated interventions against degradation, illegal building, and petty crime.

Piazza Garibaldi and the Vasto area remain a key hub for Naples. The challenge, following the police operation, will be to consolidate the rule of law and ensure that safety, decorum, and livability become stable conditions for those who pass through, live, and work in this part of the city every day.
