Cecchettin Murder, No Shortened Trial for Filippo Turetta: He Is Accused of Premeditated Murder

The Venice Prosecutor's Office has closed its investigation into Filippo Turetta, a 22-year-old in prison for the femicide of his ex-girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin.

The charges against him are serious: voluntary homicide aggravated by premeditation and cruelty, possession of a knife, kidnapping, concealment of a corpse and stalking.

According to the Chief Prosecutor of Venice, Bruno Cherchi, Turetta had planned the murder in detail, including hiding the body and escaping.

This premeditation is supported by evidence such as the documented purchases of road maps and survival materials, the study of routes on the internet and the identification of the place where Giulia's body was later found, near Lake Barcis in Friuli.

The charge of cruelty instead derives from the manner of the murder, which have not been disclosed in detail out of respect for the victim and her family.

Abbreviated Rite Excluded

The aggravating circumstance of premeditation excludes the possibility of opting for the abbreviated procedure. The Prosecutor's Office also specified that there will be "the technical time necessary for the defense to consult the trial file, which is relevant." The preliminary hearing should be set soon.

Lawyer Stefano Tigani, legal representative of Giulia's father, expressed gratitude for the work of the investigators and the Prosecutor's Office, declaring: “Now, having read the indictment for Turetta, we will make a copy of the documents and prepare for the trial where we will be a civil party, so that Giulia finally has justice”.

The investigations were conducted by the Carabinieri and saw the contribution of the autopsy and the expert report of the RIS. The evidence collected, according to Cherchi, is “independent of Turetta’s statements, which are defensive.”
