The president of the Palio Committee, Giuseppe Auriemma, emphasized how this event represents a great work for sociality through a journey through history, accompanied by traditional games. This year, the event will focus on the theme "Mediterranean, Land and Sea of Brotherhood", placing at the center the value of peace in the context of the Mediterranean.
Young people from different countries will have a leading role in the Palio 2024. The mayor of Somma Vesuviana, Salvatore Di Sarno, invited everyone to participate, declaring that the Palio represents a moment of growth for the community, promoting the meeting of different cultures and giving life to a model of multi-ethnicity and peaceful coexistence.
Among the planned activities, there will be street food with traditional foods, ancient and modern music and street games such as tug of war, sack race and hopscotch. On September 7th, a special theatrical reenactment will take place in various parts of the city, with characters and period costumes that will revive the atmosphere of the 400s.
The culminating moment will be on September 8, with the great challenge between the teams of the Somma districts. Auriemma highlighted that the values of the Palio remain unchanged, but there will be innovations to involve young people more. A collaboration with academic institutions is also planned to develop a public history project involving other countries such as Spain, closely linked to the history of Somma Vesuviana during the Aragonese domination.
The Palio is described as an event of great importance that celebrates memory, culture and the union of diversity. The organizers invite everyone, both local and foreign, to participate and discover the beauty of sociality and conviviality that characterizes Somma Vesuviana. The Palio has received two Medals of Recognition from the Presidency of the Republic and numerous patronages from both the European Commission and national and regional institutions, confirming the cultural and social importance of this event.
