Hearings begin today in Maradona's death trial, first witnesses are police officers

Witness hearings begin today in the trial over the death of Diego Armando Maradona, which occurred on November 25, 2020: the case continues to arouse global interest and today the first witnesses will be heard, the police officers who rushed to the legendary footballer's home immediately after receiving the news of his death.

According to the newspaper “Infobae”, the Prosecutor’s Office will focus in particular on the possible negligence in the management of the health of the “Diez” during the last days of his life. Contrary to what was initially indicated by some media, Maradona’s direct relatives, such as his eldest children Dalma, Giannina, Jana and Diego Junior, are not expected to be heard at the moment. Close friends, journalists or Dr. Collin Campbell, Maradona’s neighbor and one of the first to see the footballer’s body, will also not be heard.

Today, among the witnesses summoned are police officer Lucas Farias and commissioners Lucas Rodrigo Borge and Leonardo Mendoza, who were among the first officers to enter Maradona's home after his death. Their testimonies are considered essential by the Prosecutor's Office to clarify the condition of the body in the first hours after the Argentine champion's death.

The trial, which could last a long time given the large number of witnesses (around 90), will also include a review of the transcripts of the red code from the day of Maradona's death, as well as the video documenting his first entry into the champion's home after his death. Additionally, the autopsy video will be examined, which confirmed that Maradona died of "acute cardiac failure, which caused acute pulmonary edema ," due to "dilated cardiomyopathy."

Another aspect of the process will involve assessing the conditions of the house where Maradona spent the last months of his life, to determine whether it was suitable for home care. His medical condition over the past 20 years will also be reviewed to determine whether the medical protocol adopted was adequate for his health issues.
