The investigation into the Faito cable car tragedy is in full swing. In the coming days, consultants from the Torre Annunziata Prosecutor's Office will conduct an inspection of the disaster site, where last Thursday one of the cabins fell along the route connecting Castellammare di Stabia with the top of the mountain, causing four victims and one serious injury.
The experts, accompanied by the State Police, Firefighters and Alpine Rescue personnel, will be supported by the magistrates of the pool led by the prosecutor Nunzio Fragliasso.
The investigators' attention will focus in particular on the towing cable - to which the cabin was still attached at the time of the fall - and on the braking system which, unlike the cabin downstream, did not come into operation.
At the moment, prosecutors Giuliano Schioppi and Alessandra Riccio, together with deputy prosecutor Giovanni Cilenti, are hypothesizing the crimes of negligent disaster, multiple negligent homicide and negligent injuries. Investigators are sifting through about 15 folders of documents, including safety certifications, tests and maintenance records, including weekly checks.
There is now awaiting the autopsies on the victims, which could lead to the registration of the first suspects. The accident killed Janan Suliman, a 25-year-old Israeli-Palestinian pharmacist;
British couple Elaine Margaret Winn (58) and Derek Winn (65); and Carmine Parlato, 59-year-old Eav train driver, resident in Castellammare. Thabet Suliman, 23, Janan's brother, remains in serious condition in hospital.
In the meantime, the city is in mourning. Two religious ceremonies were held in memory of the victims: the first at the Sanctuary of Pozzano, where Archbishop Francesco Alfano addressed words of comfort to the citizens, underlining the social and economic consequences of the tragedy; the second at the Sanctuary of San Michele sul fact, frequented by the plant operators.
Particularly touching was the presence of the colleagues of Carmine Parlato, a worker passionate about the cableway who, to return to drive those cabins, had given up another assignment.
The closure of the facility, which in 2023 had registered over 108 thousand passengers, represents a hard blow for the entire tourist economy of the area, based on trekking, catering and hospitality. Today, in the square at an altitude of 1.100, usually crowded on holidays, silence reigned.
