Afragola – A macabre discovery casts a disturbing shadow over the cemetery of Afragola. According to reports sent to the deputy of the Green Left Alliance Francesco Emilio Borrelli by citizens, in several areas of the cemetery there is a situation of serious degradation, with damaged burial niches and, even more disconcerting, mortal remains exposed in plain sight.
The complaint echoes what was recently found in the monumental cemetery of Naples, where the Carabinieri of the Poggioreale company have seized an area characterized by broken tombs, exposed bones and accumulations of plant waste. A parallelism that, according to Borrelli and Salvatore Iavarone, territorial manager of Europa Verde, highlights a widespread problem in the management of burial sites between cities and the hinterland.
“We immediately asked the municipal administration and the cemetery management to provide us with urgent explanations and to verify the veracity of these shocking reports, in order to put an end to this macabre spectacle,” Borrelli and Iavarone jointly declared.
The two politicians have expressed strong criticism towards the cemetery management, underlining an alleged diligence in the collection of fees by congregations and municipalities, contrasted with an unacceptable slowness when it comes to maintenance, decorum and respect for the dignity of the deceased.
"For too long, practically forever, there has been something, much more than something, that is wrong with the management of cemeteries. Both congregations and municipalities are very quick and punctual in pocketing citizens' money, but when it comes to providing for maintenance, maintaining decorum and dignity they take it easy, waiting for the deceased to turn to dust", they added in indignant tones.
The report from Afragola reopens the wound of degradation in cemeteries, raising questions about the care and respect due to the deceased and the places of their memory. We now await concrete responses from the competent authorities to remedy this situation that offends public sensitivity and human dignity.
