Amalfi, the 70th Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics gets underway

With the inauguration of the exhibition dedicated to historical posters and the presentation of the new costumes of the parade, Amalfi officially launched the 70th edition of the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics. In the evocative setting of the ancient Arsenal, Mayor Daniele Milano opened the rich cultural program that will accompany the city until the great event on Sunday 18 May 2025.

An edition with a strong symbolic value, celebrating seven decades of history and challenges between Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice. The common thread is the memory of those who contributed to building the identity of the event, such as Francesco Amodio, one of the architects of the first founding act, passionately recalled by his nephew Antonino Savo Amodio.

The heart of the inauguration is also the celebratory volume, a unique issue of over sixty pages that collects testimonies, insights and stories from past editions. Among the most anticipated novelties, the parade of the historical procession will see for the first time eight new costumes designed by Maria Nolli and made by the Canzanella tailoring shop in Naples: figures inspired by medieval frescoes and sculptures of the Amalfi tradition, including knights, merchants and noblewomen.

The event was also sealed by a special confectionery creation, the “Pan delle Repubbliche”, created by the historic Pasticceria Pansa, which displayed the official trophy of the regatta in its windows: a gold and silver galleon supported by seahorses and decorated with the coats of arms of the four maritime cities.

The program continues with the conference on the historical port of Amalfi and, in the evening, with live music by the “Frankie and Canthina Band” in Piazza Duomo, while the city prepares to welcome the rival delegations for a challenge that combines sport, tradition and identity passion.
