Rome – “A beautiful scudetto because it was unexpected: no one believed in it, not even us insiders”. Bruno Giordano, historic goalscorer for Napoli and Lazio, now a sports commentator, does not hide his enthusiasm for the fourth title won by the Azzurri under the guidance of Antonio Conte.
The Conte Miracle: From a Disastrous Start to Triumph
“Last year Napoli was tenth at -41 from Inter, and this season started with a 3-0 defeat by Verona – says Giordano – But Conte has done an extraordinary job. I am happy for him and for the team, which has been able to overturn all the predictions”.
Comparing this success to the first Scudetto in 1987, that of the Maradona-Giordano duo, the former striker underlines the differences:
So “We were unprepared to win, we lived with conflicting emotions”;
Today “Napoli is a structured club, accustomed to success after the latest triumphs”.
The memory of 1987: “With Maradona it was a revolution”
Giordano retraces the years that led to the first title:
1984: The arrival of Maradona, but eighth place in the championship;
1985: With Pecci and Garella, Napoli finished third;
1986-87: “The perfect season, when we made history.”
Lazio and their contribution to the Azzurri triumph
As a former white and blue flag bearer, Giordano does not forget Lazio's role in this context:
Pedro's brace against Inter, with the chant “Pedro Pedro Pè” going viral in Naples;
A twinning? “It would be nice to unite these two very passionate fan bases.”
Inzaghi and Inter's collapse: "Conte didn't do anything wrong"
When asked about a possible “gift” from Inter, Giordano is clear:
“Sorry for Simone, but the credit goes to Conte: game after game, he built a winning group. And to think that only a year ago many players wanted to leave Naples…”.
A triumph that smacks of legend, in short, that unites past and present. And while the city rejoices, Giordano smiles: "This championship is proof that in football, with the right mentality, everything is possible".
