Naples – A bitter May Day for Campania, marked by the memory of the eleven victims of accidents at work since the beginning of the year.
The traditional trade union demonstration of Cgil, Cisl and Uil in Piazza Municipio in Naples has transformed into a heartfelt appeal for security and justice, with a moving thought addressed to Carmine Parlato, deceased on the Faito cable car, and Salvatore Reindeer, died in the construction site of the Piazza Municipio subway.
The most touching moment was the speech of Simona Esposito, mother of Patrizio Spasiano, the nineteen year old who tragically disappeared in January in the Frigocaserta factory in Gricignano d'Aversa. Her voice breaking with pain, Mrs. Esposito let out a cry of accusation: “My son was killed, he didn’t have a work-related accident.”
The mother recounted the dramatic circumstances surrounding the death of the young welder, who had been employed for just two months. “They had promised us that my son would stay in a small factory to learn,” he said bitterly. “Instead, through a subcontract, he was sent to another factory, without the necessary skills, without a safety course.”
The tragic event dates back to January 10, when an ammonia leak in the Frigocaserta plant took the life of young Patrizio, who was busy maintaining a tank. “My son walked into a shed with ammonia pipes. I’m sure he didn’t even know what was there. They sent him up on a scaffolding by himself. When the ammonia pipe burst, the others ran away. He stayed there for five hours with ammonia on his face, protected only by his hands.”, vehemently denounced the mother.
The moving testimony of Simona Esposito and the requests of the unions have made the First of May in Campania a moment of deep reflection on the scourge of accidents at work, a warning so that tragedies like that of Patrizio do not happen again and that justice is finally obtained for the victims and their families.
