Naples – A 67-year-old man, originally from Naples and already known to the police, was reported this afternoon by the State Police for the crimes of personal injury and resisting a public official.
The unfortunate episode occurred along Via Cristoforo Colombo, a few kilometers from the finish line of the sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia, when the final sprint was launched.
According to the reconstruction, the man suddenly crossed the roadway at the crucial moment of the passage of the competing athletes, seriously endangering their safety. Eyewitnesses report that the 67-year-old was holding a hose at the moment of crossing.
The quick reflexes of the State Police officers, engaged in public order services set up to guarantee the safety of the sporting event, avoided much more serious consequences. The officers intervened promptly, managing to block the man and prevent him from continuing his potentially dangerous action.
The subject was subsequently identified and reported by DIGOS personnel (General Investigations and Special Operations Division) for the crimes of personal injury, in reference to the danger created for cyclists, and resisting a public official, for the opposition presumably manifested during the intervention of the officers.
The episode caused no small amount of astonishment and concern among spectators gathered along the route and among the Giro d'Italia workers, highlighting once again the crucial importance of safety devices and the professionalism of the police in ensuring the smooth running of events of this magnitude. Investigations are now underway to further clarify the reasons for the man's actions.
