Naples – A large banner appeared in the Spanish Quarter of Naples with a message of closeness to the family of Martina Carbonaro, the 14-year-old killed in Afragola by her ex-boyfriend: “To the Carbonaro family, close and in solidarity.”
A gesture of solidarity that moved the city, but which clashed with the violence of insults and accusations poured out on social media against the young woman's parents.
Francesco Emilio Borrelli, MP for the Green Left Alliance, visited Marcello Carbonaro and Enza Cossentino, Martina's parents, to express his institutional solidarity.
“Naples responded with a noble gesture, choosing to be on the right side, in defense of an innocent death,” Borrelli said, commenting on the banner. However, the deputy also denounced the dark side of the story: the heavy insults suffered by the family on social media.
In particular, a video shared on TikTok by a user sparked outrage, accusing the parents of being responsible for their daughter's death with words defined as "unheard of vulgarity and violence". The author of the video did not limit himself to attacking the family, but also directed racist insults against all southerners, labeling them as "ignorant and inferior".
Accompanied by the lawyer Sergio Pisani, Martina's father filed a defamation complaint against the author of the video. "This is absurd," commented Borrelli. "Two parents who have tragically lost their daughter must endure insults and defamatory accusations. This behavior cannot go unpunished."
The MP praised Marcello Carbonaro's decision to proceed legally, stressing that "it is unacceptable that Martina's memory is being tarnished and that her parents' pain is being insulted."
The case, which has shocked public opinion, highlights the need to combat online hatred and protect victims of such deep grief. “In the face of a terrible death, the only response should be closeness and respect,” concluded Borrelli, calling for unity in supporting the Carbonaro family and firmly condemning all forms of verbal violence.
