Naples, city divided over Israeli tourists case

Share

Naples – The episode of the two Israeli tourists turned away from the Taverna Santa Chiara because of their nationality continues to be a topic of discussion, dividing public opinion and city politics.

The 5 Star Movement sides with restaurateur Nives Monda, a victim according to them of “violent and unacceptable attacks”. “We have always denounced Netanyahu’s criminal policies”, says Gilda Sportiello, deputy and coordinator of the M5S in Naples.

On the other hand, Forza Italia firmly condemns the gesture.Napoli it is a welcoming city, anti-Semitism has no place here”, says Iris Savastano, city councilor, announcing a motion against all forms of hatred.

The Democratic Party also intervenes, reiterating the need for a "ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages", but condemning any discrimination: "Contesting Israel does not mean attacking the Jews".

The city questions itself

In the bars and on the streets, Neapolitans argue. “It’s not done, welcoming comes first,” says Marco, a tobacconist. Francesca, 42, is indignant: “Did he kick them out just because they were Israelis?”

But there are those who defend the restaurateur, like Enzo: "She expressed her opinion without violence." Others, like Gabriele, 28, wrote on Instagram: "Zionists out of the premises."

The prosecutor's office is evaluating whether there are grounds for criminal prosecution, while the owner of the venue reports online threats. In the meantime, Neapolitan cultural associations have invited the two tourists to dinner as a symbolic compensation.

Naples looks in the mirror and asks itself: “What kind of city do we want to be when the world is looking at us?”
