Sorrento – The Sorrento City Council has unanimously approved President Luigi Di Prisco’s proposal to officially name the city after the famous poet Torquato Tasso, a native of the place.
From now on, Sorrento will also be known as “Sorrento, City of Torquato Tasso”, an acknowledgement that celebrates the deep bond between the territory and the author of Gerusalemme Liberata.
“A historic moment for our community,” said Di Prisco, visibly satisfied. “With this decision we pay homage to a genius who brought Sorrento to the world through his verses, making it a symbol of culture and beauty.”
The initiative goes beyond the simple naming: there are commemorative signs and plaques planned, as well as permanent cultural events to enhance Tasso's legacy. "An extraordinary opportunity for tourism and culture," added Di Prisco, underlining the identity impact of the choice.
The President thanked the Council and the citizens for their unanimous support, calling the initiative “a bridge between our glorious past and a future of new prospects for Sorrento”.
