Minister Abodi critical: “Spalletti’s sacking? It left me perplexed”

Share

Luciano Spalletti's dismissal is not just a technical issue. The words of Andrea Abodi, Minister for Sport and Youth, who — speaking during the meeting "Quo vadis Roma?" at the Maxxi Museum — sent a clear message to the Federation and the world of Italian football: changing coaches is not enough, a profound shake-up of the system is needed.

“The management of the dismissal left me perplexed – said Abodi – but I won't go into the merits of the technical choices. The trust given after the European Championships should have been seen as an opportunity, but now there are responsibilities that go beyond the figure of the coach." The minister's reference is to the federal president Gabriele Gravina, re-elected with a 98% consensus, who now, according to Abodi, must take charge of the need for a structural refoundation, not only in sport.

The direction seems clear: by July - or at the latest by August - an independent commission will be operational, charged with collaborating with the FIGC in an external and impartial manner. “Not to invade the field – specifies Abodi – but to ensure that the equity criteria, the property controls, the championship entry rules and all the regulatory mechanisms are truly effective.”

A statement that sounds like a warning to those who lead Italian football today: reforms must pass through concrete and shared actions, not simple changes of appearance. Parliament will be involved, but without institutional clashes: “Everyone stays within their own perimeter — concluded the minister — but collaborate constructively. If a new law is needed, we are ready to write it.”
