Naples Airport in chaos: second day of radar blackout, 35 thousand passengers stranded

Share

Napoli – For the second consecutive day, Naples Capodichino International Airport is paralyzed by a serious failure in its radar systems, affecting thousands of travelers.

According to estimates by ItaliaRimborso, at least 35.000 passengers are involved in cancellations and delays, with interminable queues, lost suitcases and cancelled travel plans.

Never-ending emergency

The malfunction, which began yesterday, has not yet been resolved and continues to block departing and arriving flights. passengers, many with children in tow, report:

Lack of clear information from airport operators
Waits up to 10 hours to reschedule flights
Extra costs for hotels and alternative transportation
“I had to reach Frankfurt for a contract worth one million: now everything is at risk,” says Marco De Luca, an entrepreneur stuck at the airport.

Why compensation is not due

The failure falls under “exceptional circumstances” (EU Regulation 261/2004), i.e. events not attributable to the airlines. This means:
No right to standard compensation (up to €600 for delays >3h)
But yes to reimbursement of expenses incurred

Here's what to do to get a refund

Passengers may request a refund for:

Meals and drinks while waiting
Forced overnight stays
Taxis/trains to reach alternative destinations
Attention: keep all receipts (they are mandatory for the request).

Expert advice

“We recommend contacting specialized companies like ours,” explains a spokesperson for ItaliaRimborso, which offers:
Free case analysis
Assistance in requesting to companies
Debt collection without upfront costs

When will normality return?

ENAV assures that technicians are working 24 hours a day, but does not provide certain timescales. In the meantime, passengers are advised:

Contact the airline immediately
Check alternatives with trains or buses
Avoid going to the airport without confirmation
