Mercato San Severino – An act of unheard-of cruelty has shocked the community of Mercato San Severino, in the province of Salerno, where yesterday a dog was killed and another seriously injured by hammer blows from an as yet unknown assailant. The episode has sparked outrage and calls for justice.
Senator Michaela Biancofiore, president of the Civici d'Italia, Nm, Udc, Maie group, expressed very harsh words about the incident. "It is an unacceptable atrocity, I would say inhumane. What happened in Mercato San Severino must not go unpunished", declared Biancofiore.
The senator called for a rapid intervention by the police to identify the person responsible for this “terrifying execution” and expressed the hope that the new law that provides for prison sentences for similar behavior, approved by Parliament last week, could find its first application in this case.
“I cannot hope for anything else,” Biancofiore said, underlining a concept he had already expressed in the past: “Whoever commits such brutal crimes will potentially be capable of repeating them with humans. I think so, I have said so in all places and I reaffirm it on this very sad occasion.”
The incident has brought the spotlight back on the need for severe punishment for animal abuse and the correlation between violence against animals and violent behavior toward people. Investigations are ongoing to shed full light on this barbaric act and bring the perpetrator to justice.
