SIt will most likely be the hottest week of the year: Italy is preparing to face the first real heat wave of 2025, with temperatures up to 10 degrees above the seasonal average. The African anticyclone arriving from North Africa is pushing masses of scorching air towards central Europe, fully investing the Peninsula.
According to meteorologists' forecasts, the exceptional heat will affect not only Italy, but also Spain, France, Switzerland and Germany, with peaks of 12-14°C above the climatic averages for the period. In Italy, temperatures will reach 38°C in Florence and Bologna, 37°C in Rome, 35°C in Milan, while in Sardinia they could reach 41-42°C.
The African blaze has already hit the South, where 40°C was recorded in Sicily and 39°C between Puglia and Sardinia, but in the next few hours the thermal anomaly will also hit the Center-North, transforming into a widespread and potentially dangerous phenomenon on a national scale.
In addition to the “human fever” maximum temperatures, night-time minimum temperatures will also increase significantly: tropical nights with temperatures up to 25°C are expected in the Po Valley, compromising rest and worsening physical discomfort, especially among the elderly and frail.
The heat will gradually escalate, with an estimated increase of 1 degree per day and a peak expected on Sunday 8 June. There could be temporary relief between Sunday evening and Wednesday 18, with instability and possible thunderstorms, but a new temperature rise in conjunction with the Summer Solstice is not excluded.
According to experts, we are now immersed in what is called the "New Italian Summer": if in the last century the days of extreme heat were limited to 5-10 a year, today we count between 40 and 50 days with conditions of intense mugginess or scorching temperatures. And as climatologists remind us: the hottest year will always be the next one.
