Fires devastate Naples and worry citizens
Napoli – A wave of fires has brought Naples to its knees in the last 48 hours, with blazes reported in multiple parts of the city and a blanket of toxic smoke that is worrying citizens.
From Secondigliano to Gianturco, from the Centro Direzionale to Agnano and Monte Sant'Angelo, the flames have devoured vegetation and waste, often accumulated in illegal landfills, releasing harmful substances and putting public health at risk.
In Secondigliano, on Saturday, a fire that broke out in an area used as a landfill near the prison was put out by the Fire Brigade, preventing the flames from reaching the detention facility and nearby homes.
Critical situations also between Gianturco and the Centro Direzionale, where since Friday afternoon there have been fires with thick columns of smoke visible for kilometers away. Same scenario between Agnano and Monte Sant'Angelo, where the toxic cloud has alarmed the residents.
To denounce theemergency it is the deputy of the Green-Side Alliance, Francesco Emilio Borrelli, reached by numerous reports from citizens.
“We are on maximum alert: the abnormal heat and illegal landfills create a very high risk. We need an extraordinary prevention and surveillance plan,” Borrelli said. “We cannot tolerate that entire areas of the city are being devastated and that Neapolitans live under the threat of toxic fumes. Public health must be protected, this devastation must end.”
Firefighters are working to contain the fires, but Borrelli's appeal points the finger at the management of illegal landfills, often fertile ground for arson, and calls for urgent interventions to prevent further emergencies in an already troubled city.
