Night of tammurriata in Piazza Mercato in Naples
From July 5st to XNUMXth, Piazza Mercato will once again be transformed into the great pulsating drum of Neapolitan popular culture. In fact, La Notte della Tammorra is back, in its XNUMXrd edition, the most important folk festival in Campania conceived by Carlo Faiello, which this year too unites tradition, music and spirituality in an embrace that involves the entire city.
The 2025 edition, promoted by the Municipality as part of “Estate a Napoli” and the “Napoli Città della Musica” project, turns the spotlight on one of the oldest and most vital forms of southern heritage: the tammurriata, which lives again between ancestral rhythms and new artistic contaminations. After last year's record, with over 30 thousand attendees, the festival is richer and more ambitious, with a program capable of intertwining live performances, workshops, spirituality and reflection.
On Friday 4th July Serena Rossi will thrill the audience with a special evening that will begin with the Canto 'a figliola' in honour of the Madonna del Carmine and will continue with the Tammurriata di Accoglienza. On stage with her, some of the most appreciated interpreters of the ethno-musical scene such as Ars Nova Napoli, Simona Boo, Irene Scarpato, Lavinia Mancusi, the Assurd quartet, the Bagarjia Orkestar and masters of tradition such as Antonio 'o Lione Matrone and Dario Mogavero.
The following day, Saturday 5th July, it will be the turn of Peppe Barra, living legend of popular song, accompanied by Roberto Colella de The mask. Carlo Faiello, as concertmaster, will lead the audience on a journey through the dances and languages of the South, accompanied by artists who are symbols of regional tradition: Mimmo Cavallaro for the Calabrian tarantella, Piero Ricci for the Molise saltarello, Ugo Mazzei with Sicilian singing and the Officine Popolari Lucane.
The event will culminate with the concert of the Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, on tour to celebrate 50 years of career, and will close with the Ballo Notturno, a collective ritual that, as per tradition, will continue until dawn on July 6 with the spontaneous paranze. Alongside the music, there will also be space for training and reflection. Every day there will be dance and percussion workshops in the church of Santa Croce and Purgatorio al Mercato, while on Thursday July 3 the conference “Tarantella in forma di rosa” will be held with anthropologists, ethnomusicologists and musicians in comparison.
“We celebrate the dance, the ancient song and the languages of the South in a journey that links past and present”, underlines Carlo Faiello. “Piazza Mercato returns to being the heart of the lost and rediscovered rhythm”. A vision also shared by the Municipality of Naples, which reaffirms the value of this event as an example of inclusive and identity-based culture, capable of making the roots dialogue with the new generations.
