Caserta is rallying around a new, painful chapter of the femicide that has shocked San Felice a Cancello. Luzmil Toci, 31, convicted of the murder of his wife Eleanor Toci, took his own life today in the prison of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, where he was serving his sentence for the crime committed last October 9.
The suicide occurred in the psychiatric area of the penitentiary facility, rekindling the spotlight on a case that had already deeply affected the local community. The man had killed Eleanor in their home, in front of their two young children, then aged 6 and 4, an act that had shaken consciences and rekindled the drama of gender violence in the area.
Authorities are investigating to clarify how the suicide occurred, while the debate on the management of mentally fragile prisoners and the effectiveness of measures to prevent tragedies inside and outside prisons is growing. The case of Luzmil Toci poses a further challenge to institutions in ensuring safety, justice and protection for those who suffer violence, while work continues to not forget the victims and to combat a phenomenon that too often ends in irreparable tragedies.
