Tragedy in Torre del Greco, dead man pulled alive
Torre del Greco – Sixty-four-year-old Diego Olimpiade, who was seriously injured in the explosion this morning that caused the partial collapse of a building in Largo Benigno, in the heart of the historic center of Torre del Greco, died this afternoon at the Ospedale del Mare in Naples.
The man had been extracted alive by firefighters after a delicate operation among the rubble, but his conditions immediately appeared critical: he remained intubated and unconscious for over six hours, before his heart stopped.
The explosion occurred around 12:30 and shook the entire neighborhood. The apartment on the ground floor of number 8, inhabited by the victim, was gutted. The explosion caused part of the structure to collapse on two levels, causing significant damage to nearby homes.
Among the people rescued was also a disabled woman, who was unharmed and rescued by the rescuers. According to an initial hypothesis, the explosion could have been caused by a gas leak, perhaps from a five-liter camping cylinder found intact among the rubble, but it will be the investigation by the Carabinieri that will shed full light on the incident.
Meanwhile, the inspections by the technicians continue Common to verify the stability of the surrounding buildings. Five families were evacuated as a precaution: two found temporary accommodation on their own, while for the other three, interventions by the municipal social services are already underway, as confirmed by Mayor Luigi Mennella.
The area of the collapse remains cordoned off and guarded by the police. The community is in shock over a tragedy that has shaken the heart of the city to the core.
