Napoli – A step forward for the rebirth of Napoli East: The extension of Via Boccaperti, a road just 190 meters long, was inaugurated this morning. For the first time, it directly connects the two public beaches of San Giovanni a Teduccio, previously separated by the former sewage treatment plant managed by ABC.
The opening of the new section, celebrated in the presence of the mayor Gaetano Manfredi, by the Infrastructure Councilor Edoardo Cosenza, by the city councilors Ciro Borriello and Aniello Esposito, by the president of the VI Municipality Alessandro Fucito and by the leaders of ABC, represents a fundamental step towards restoring easier and more inclusive access to the sea for citizens.
An intervention long awaited
The extension of Via Boccaperti, just over 4 meters wide and featuring a pedestrian sidewalk, bypasses the obstacle posed by the former sewage treatment plant, which over the years had interrupted the continuity between the road and the San Giovanni beach towards Pietrarsa.
Until now, the only public access to the beach was through the pedestrian underpass at Vico I Marina, an inconvenient solution, especially for those with mobility issues. Thanks to the move back of the ABC facility's fence and the restoration of the original route, the new driveway not only facilitates access to the beach, but also facilitates the arrival of service and security vehicles.
The project, carried out by ABC on behalf of the Municipality's Soil Protection and Reclamation Service, was made possible thanks to a detailed investigation involving the Ministry of the Environment, the ASL Napoli 1 Centro, the ISPRA (Italian Environmental Protection Agency), and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (National Institute of Health), culminating in the authorization dated August 5, 2025.
The road, classified as public use on August 20th, has been completed with the renovation of the lighting, the installation of new signage, and the resurfacing of the road, all of which were carried out by ABC under the service contracts with the Municipality. Maintenance of the route will now be entrusted to the VI Municipality.
Towards a makeover of the East Coast
The opening of the Via Boccaperti extension is just the first step in a more ambitious project that will transform the eastern coast of Naples. Larger-scale projects will begin in the coming months, funded with €7 million from the "Pompei Vesuvio Napoli" Institutional Development Contract.
Among the planned works are the demolition of a wall, the creation of a new reef, and the construction of a seafront terrace with a solarium in the area of the former sewage treatment plant, currently in the executive planning phase.
These interventions aim to give back to the citizens a public space that has been denied for a long time, transforming an area marked by degradation into a pole of attraction for residents and tourists. The beach of Saint John Towards Pietrarsa, which will be suitable for swimming again in the summer of 2024 thanks to positive findings from ARPAC, it is already a reference point for sun therapy and bathing.
The new connection not only makes it easier to use, but also represents a concrete gesture towards inclusivity, making the coast accessible even to those with mobility difficulties.
The inauguration of the Via Boccaperti extension is not just an infrastructural project, but a strong signal of urban regeneration in an area like East Naples, long neglected and marked by decay and abandonment. Reconnecting the two public beaches responds to a need for social justice: the sea, a collective heritage, must be accessible to all, without physical or social barriers.
This project, despite its simplicity, demonstrates how targeted interventions can have a significant impact on residents' quality of life, especially in peripheral neighborhoods like San Giovanni a Teduccio, where the lack of quality public spaces is a long-standing problem. Attention to inclusivity is another crucial aspect. The new road facilitates access to the sea for those with mobility difficulties, a step forward toward a city that leaves no one behind.
However, the success of these interventions will depend on the institutions' ability to ensure maintenance, safety, and participatory management of public spaces, involving the local community and local associations.
A model for the future
ABC's commitment, which reconfigured its wastewater pumping plant to allow the opening of the route, demonstrates the importance of collaboration between public bodies for the common good.
The San Giovanni a Teduccio project could become a model for other areas of the city and the region, where the reclamation of coastal spaces and the reclamation of abandoned sites can be a catalyst for economic and social revitalization. While East Naples prepares for a redesign that promises to transform its coastline, the opening of the Via Boccaperti extension is a first, concrete sign of change. It's an invitation to look to the future with optimism, but also a warning to remain vigilant in protecting and enhancing public assets, to ensure that Naples' sea truly returns to being a common asset.

The opening of the new stretch of Via Boccaperti is good news for East Naples. But I hope maintenance is guaranteed over time. Access to the sea must remain free for all, without problems.
