Capri-Naples Marathon: Peppe Lamberti Nuoto Club team wins relay race

The breathtaking Capri-Naples crossing, one of the most challenging open water swimming challenges, saw the success of three athletes from the Peppe Lamberti Nuoto Club. Michelangelo Manzo, Massimiliano Santopietro, and Mimmo Scaldaferri tackled the 36-kilometer course as a relay team, crossing the finish line after approximately 9 hours and 8 minutes of relentless swimming.

The race, held on Friday, June 26, was characterized by particularly difficult weather and sea conditions, which put the participants to the test. Only five teams—four relays and one duo—managed to complete the crossing. No individual athlete reached the finish line.

The trio from Peppe Lamberti Nuoto Club, known as “the 3 amigos,” finished third overall, preceded by two relay teams of five and six swimmers, Team Marche and CDS Sapa Team, respectively.

The group is made up of highly experienced athletes: Michelangelo Manzo, a Coast Guard Petty Officer in Salerno, who began his athletic career in water polo before switching to open-water swimming; Massimiliano Santopietro, a former junior world rowing champion and experienced swimmer and triathlete; and Mimmo Scaldaferri, a veteran with 14 Capri-Naples crossings under his belt and numerous extreme triathlons such as the Ironman.

This feat marks a significant milestone for the Salerno-based club, which confirms its leadership in masters swimming and long-distance competitions, despite the difficulties encountered during the race.

The 2026 Capri-Naples Marathon saw the participation of thirty athletes from five different nations, confirming the event as a major international event in the panorama of open water swimming competitions.
