Protests erupt in Benevento, yellow foam and dead fish in the Calore River.

BENEVENTO – Concern is growing in Benevento over the presence of foam and miasma along the Calore River. The anomaly, reported in several parts of the city, has raised alarm among residents and environmental groups, who are calling for investigations into the possible source of the pollution.

The investigation is centered on a biomethane plant in the area, identified as the possible source of the foul odors and spills that have caused the appearance of yellowish foam in the waters of the river. This situation has also caused the death of numerous fish, raising concerns about the river's condition.

Environmental groups, including the WWF, have urged the relevant authorities to clarify the source of the phenomenon and any responsibilities. Meanwhile, Benevento Mayor Clemente Mastella has rejected criticisms leveled at the city administration, clarifying its responsibilities.

"I see them talking about an environmental disaster as if the rivers depended on the municipality," Mastella stated, "but they don't realize they actually depend on the Region and other agencies. The river isn't a stagnant lake, but a waterway that flows through different areas: we need to understand where these outflows come from."

The mayor nevertheless acknowledged the City's efforts to address the odor-related issues. "Regarding the odor issue, we did everything we could: I engaged the relevant authorities, even issuing a mayoral order to mitigate the problems with the biomethane plant in the area, but the Regional Administrative Court (TAR) extended the deadline."

On the health front, Mastella reassured the public, explaining that, according to information received from the relevant authorities, there are no health risks. "The unbreathable air, which causes severe discomfort, is one thing," he said, "but there is no health problem. This is what the authorities tell me: the local health authority (ASL) has also been activated and confirms there are no risks."

However, rapid intervention remains necessary to resolve the situation. "The biomass must be removed quickly to eliminate the problem," Mastella concluded, "and a coordinated intervention between all relevant agencies is needed."
