Naples – A 19-year-old man of Tunisian origin, already known to law enforcement and a resident of Portici, was attacked and robbed of his cell phone and wallet at knifepoint just steps from the central station. The incident occurred this morning in Piazza Garibaldi, where Carabinieri officers from the Napoli Stella Company reported him at large.
The incident unfolded in a matter of minutes. The officers were patrolling the area when, near Piazza Mancini, they were stopped by a very agitated Ghanaian man. The man reported having just been surrounded and robbed by a three-man commando armed with blades.
After providing descriptions of the robbers, Carabinieri officers immediately cordoned off the area. The manhunt ended nearby, on Via Firenze, where the Carabinieri located and arrested the 19-year-old, who was later identified by the victim. During the search, the young man was found in possession of a switchblade.
A short distance from the scene of the arrest, the officers also recovered the victim's smartphone, which had been thrown to the ground in an attempt to dispose of it. It was returned to its rightful owner. The 19-year-old will now face charges of robbery; investigations are ongoing to identify the two accomplices who managed to escape.
