Tourists stranded in Pioppaino
Naples The violent storm that hit Naples and its province this afternoon caused serious disruption to the Circumvesuviana train system, leaving hundreds of commuters and tourists stranded for hours along the Vesuvian lines.
The greatest problems were reported in the Pioppaino area of Castellammare di Stabia, where passengers on two trains were forced to disembark due to the disruption. Long waits and severe chaos ensued, exacerbated by the presence of numerous foreign visitors stranded at the station with no way to continue their journey.
The disruption was caused by strong winds, which damaged power lines and caused debris to fall onto the tracks. Through its official channels, the Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV) announced the suspension of service, first on the stretch from Torre del Greco to Torre Annunziata (Sant'Antonio station) and subsequently on the stretch between Pompeii Villa dei Misteri and Pioppaino.
The transport company's technicians are working to restore the air network, but it's not yet possible to estimate the reopening time. To limit the disruption, EAV has established a replacement shuttle service with four buses operating on the Pompeii-Castellammare route, apologizing to passengers for the disruption caused by adverse weather conditions.
