August and the elderly: the risks of heat, from dehydration to loneliness.

With the arrival of mid-August, the health risks for the elderly due to heat waves increase. Geriatrician Nicola Ferrara emphasizes the importance of proper hydration, food preservation, and avoiding social isolation.

With the arrival of summer and the hottest days, especially around mid-August, seniors face particular risks related to high temperatures. Geriatrician Nicola Ferrara, a professor at the University of Naples Federico II, warns against dehydration, a major threat to older adults, especially those taking medications or suffering from chronic conditions.

Excessive fluid loss can compromise kidney function and alter the body's mineral balance. For this reason, it's essential to drink water regularly throughout the day, without waiting until you feel thirsty, and to supplement your diet with foods rich in potassium and magnesium, after consulting your doctor.

Another crucial aspect concerns blood pressure control, especially for those taking diuretics or hypertension medications, and the need to avoid sun exposure during the hottest hours of the day, preferring cool or air-conditioned environments. A fan can be a cost-effective and effective alternative to air conditioning.

Ferrara also emphasizes the importance of properly storing food during the summer to prevent food poisoning and infections due to heat-induced bacterial growth. Perishable foods require special attention in terms of storage times and methods.

Finally, the geriatrician draws attention to an often overlooked risk: loneliness among older adults during the summer, when family and friends may be far away. The lack of social interaction can exacerbate feelings of sadness and isolation, with potential repercussions on physical and mental well-being. Promoting moments of social interaction and care in neighborhoods and communities is therefore essential to ensure comprehensive protection during heatwaves.

In short, caring for the elderly during Ferragosto doesn't just mean protecting them from the heat and keeping them hydrated, but also monitoring their health and combating loneliness.
