Panettone is no longer just a Christmas dessert. Summer consumption is growing in Italy and abroad, with innovative reinterpretations and initiatives to promote this symbol of Made in Italy year-round.

Panettone conquers summer: consumption rises during the Ferragosto holiday and new artisanal interpretations are being introduced.
Panettone, traditionally associated with the Christmas season, is also gaining popularity in the warmer seasons, with a significant increase in consumption during the Ferragosto holiday. The high summer temperatures enhance the melting butter and the complex aromas of the sourdough starter, giving the cake a softer texture and a more intense fragrance than in winter.
This trend is confirmed by major Italian companies like Agugiaro & Figna Molini, a leading flour and semolina company with a six-century history, which emphasizes how panettone is becoming a key player in contemporary pastry making globally, similar to the success of pizza. Modern consumers appreciate it in innovative versions, including savory ones, accompanied by fresh fruit, ice cream, and light creams.
In Italy, artisanal tradition remains a strong point, as demonstrated by the experience of Luigi Colandrea and his "Don Salvatore" workshop in Monte di Procida. After years of training with master baker Rolando Morandin, Colandrea launched a summer version of panettone, the "Panettone di Ferragosto," which combines strawberries, semi-candied lemon, and Madagascar vanilla, evoking the scents of the Phlegraean Fields summer.
Also in Vico Equense are the renowned pastry chefs "Andrea & Gianni," who have prepared two flavors of Ferragosto panettone, one with chocolate and one with Vesuvius pellecchielle. Under the umbrella, "It's all been made" is the slogan coined by the two pastry chefs from Vico Equense.
At the same time, a bill is being debated in the Chamber of Deputies to establish July 24th as "National Panettone Day," with the aim of protecting and promoting this Italian gastronomic excellence, often subject to foreign imitations. This recognition could strengthen panettone's position as a symbol of Made in Italy, enjoyed year-round, beyond the traditional Christmas season.
Internationally, Peru has the highest per capita consumption of panettone, while Brazil stands out as a major producer. Italy, with its historic experience and capacity for innovation, continues to lead the sector, exporting expertise and quality worldwide.
