Giugliano's inclusive beach: €170 spent on reduced accessibility

The inclusive beach in Giugliano in Campania, built with a public investment of approximately 170 euros, proved to be inadequate in terms of accessibility and functionality.

An inspection conducted by Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, accompanied by a wheelchair user and activist Umberto Mercurio, highlighted numerous critical issues that compromise the facility's effective use by people with disabilities.

The entrance path is blocked by cars parked on the sidewalks, forcing wheelchair users to ask for assistance. There is only one wheelchair space within the beach, which is deemed inadequate and impractical: the small size, challenging gradients, and excessively high loungers make transfers difficult.

Access ramps are prematurely closed, and several pieces of furniture and equipment are showing signs of deterioration, while bathrooms and showers are not accessible independently.

The total cost of the project is €120.750 for service management and €45.713 for furnishings and equipment, a sum that Borrelli believed could have been used more effectively, for example with holiday vouchers or other truly inclusive solutions. The MP described the situation as "on the edge of reality," denouncing a disrespectful management of public resources and the needs of people with disabilities, and called for a complete overhaul of the area to ensure truly inclusive access.

The case raises important questions about inclusiveness in public infrastructure, highlighting how the mere presence of dedicated facilities does not in itself guarantee effective usability and respect for the rights of people with reduced mobility.
