The decapitated statue
Another shameful act of vandalism has struck Pelara Bay, in the municipality of Forio d'Ischia. The small statue of the Madonna, located along the path leading to one of the most picturesque coves on the island's southwest coast, has once again been targeted by the usual suspects.
The sculpture was found severely damaged: a targeted attack that marks the third similar incident in the same location. The Pro Loco Panza raised the issue, expressing deep disappointment over a series of raids that openly challenge the identity of the local community: "In our community, there are those who reject our symbols and what they protect."
The statue is not a simple religious ornament nor a randomly placed element. Its installation dates back to the years when a group of volunteers mobilized to restore, secure, and make accessible the ancient path that descends from the upper section to the sea. The Madonnina was placed as a sign of gratitude to those who had returned a piece of public heritage to the community. Over the years, the sculpture has become the guardian of the path and a symbol of civic commitment to environmental protection.
Despite the anger and shock over yet another outrage, the local community's response was swift. As with the two previous raids—after which the statue was patiently restored and returned to its original location—the Pro Loco has confirmed its intention to reinstate it. "We will put it back," the volunteers assure. "The Madonnina della Pelara will continue to stand there as a reminder of an act of love and care towards our region."
