Largo Maradona, work almost complete: but will the mural get a makeover? The doubts surrounding the Golden Pibe's face remain.

Naples – Construction continues in the Spanish Quarters, even during the Ferragosto holiday. With the final paving and repairs, the redevelopment of the open space on Via Emanuele De Deo—now widely nicknamed "La Bodega de Dios"—is finally nearing its conclusion.

Barring any unexpected bureaucratic delays or last-minute technical hitches, the square, closed since May for a major renovation, will be reopened to residents and tourists by the end of the month. The attention of fans and onlookers, however, will now turn to the true beating heart of the place: the iconic image of Diego Armando Maradona.

If the surrounding space has changed, it remains to be seen if and how the gigantic painting will be restored. Will the work undergo pictorial restoration, retouching the faded colors, or will the fresco be left intact, as history and previous interventions have handed it down to the city? The debate remains open, and anticipation grows as the neighborhood's alleys reveal the final result.

A “Bodega” for everyone: the new life of the square

The work has radically transformed the area, converting a historically complex space into a neighborhood facility for public use. The model chosen for the operation is based on a partnership between the private owner of the space and the City of Naples: an agreement that guarantees free access to everyone, 24/7.

Lava rock, lights and stop at the barriers

The redevelopment project focused heavily on accessibility, completely eliminating architectural barriers thanks to a new, uniform lava stone flooring. The restyling also included the perimeter walls, the restoration of the historic gate, and the addition of street furniture such as new benches and planters.

The lighting system has been completely overhauled, designed to enhance Maradona's image even at night. Two 30-square-meter mobile kiosks protected by shade pergolas will enhance the usability of the area: one for merchandise and gifts, the other for takeaway drinks.

Zero costs for the Municipality, the ball is in the Municipality's court

From a financial standpoint, the operation will have no impact on the coffers of Palazzo San Giacomo. The management formula stipulates that the costs for cleaning, maintenance, ordinary and extraordinary maintenance, as well as utility costs, will be borne entirely by private individuals. The open space will function as a fully-fledged public city park.

Once the final details are finalized, the task of overseeing compliance with the agreements will fall to Municipality 2, which will also collaborate in planning the cultural and social events that will enliven the new square.
