Orsato sets the tone on VAR: "It should only intervene in the event of a clear and obvious error."

VAR must return to being a support tool, while the referee must regain his central role in managing matches. This is the approach outlined by Daniele Orsato, the new head of the Serie A and B referee committee, during the referees' meeting in Cascia.

"Putting the referee back at the heart of the match and using VAR as exceptional support, limiting its intervention to cases of clear and obvious error," Orsato explained to Sky Sport, outlining a direction that aims to reduce the impact of technology on decisions made on the pitch.

The reference is also to what we saw during the World Cup. "We saw how the referee was the central figure. And we want it to stay that way, that he makes the decisions and that VAR intervenes when it needs to. UEFA and FIFA have reiterated the concept of clear and obvious errors."

For Orsato, however, this isn't a revolution, but rather the implementation of new regulatory guidelines already tested in international competitions. "I wouldn't say we have anything new; we don't have to make any proclamations. You've certainly read the new regulatory changes: we saw them at the World Cup, and we will apply them."

The same guidelines, Orsato emphasized, will also be adopted by UEFA. "These are IFAB guidelines, FIFA implemented them at the World Cup, UEFA will implement them in its competitions, and we will apply them in Italy as well."

The work done during the Cascia gathering focused not only on the interpretation of the rules, but also on the referees' ability to read game situations and build a relationship of trust with the players involved.

"We've worked hard to understand the dynamics of the game," Orsato explained. "Referees always study the rules, but this week we worked to understand the dynamics and to gain the trust and credibility of the players and coaches on the pitch."
