ASL Salerno launches a telemedicine project to support health centers in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Salerno Local Health Authority (ASL) has signed an agreement with Global Health Telemedicine ETS (GHT) to develop a telemedicine project for health centers in sub-Saharan Africa. The agreement includes the voluntary participation of ASL Salerno healthcare specialists, who will provide teleconsultation support to African doctors, contributing to the assessment and management of complex clinical cases.

This initiative is part of a broader digital innovation program promoted by the Salerno Local Health Authority (ASL), led by General Manager Gennaro Sosto, and coordinated by the Telemedicine and Artificial Intelligence Process Governance Unit, headed by Dr. Antonio Coppola. The goal is to overcome geographic barriers and facilitate access to specialized expertise in contexts where such resources are limited.

Global Health Telemedicine, founded in 2013 from the experience of the Community of Sant'Egidio's DREAM program, offers a multi-specialty teleconsultation platform that connects 31 health centers in 12 sub-Saharan African countries. Through this network, local doctors can request consultations in various medical disciplines, engaging with Italian and European specialists on a voluntary basis.

The agreement guarantees that GHT will provide the technological platform and training required by Salerno Local Health Authority specialists to use the teleconsultation tools free of charge. In exchange, the Local Health Authority will promote the participation of its professionals, fostering an international exchange of expertise.

According to Director General Sosto, telemedicine represents not only a technological advancement but also an important organizational lever that expands access to care and reduces health inequalities. Dr. Coppola emphasized how technology becomes truly effective when it brings expertise closer to healthcare needs, regardless of distance.

This free and non-profit collaboration expands the application of telemedicine also in the field of international healthcare cooperation, valorising the human capital and organisational models developed by the ASL Salerno in the field of digital healthcare.
