San Giorgio a Cremano: 'Waste Scammers' Caught on Camera

San Giorgio – Incivility doesn't pay, especially when the "electronic eyes" of the local police are keeping watch. In San Giorgio a Cremano, the fight against urban decay continues unabated, with two new interventions targeting illegal waste dumping, made possible by the combination of technology and land monitoring.

The case of the sofa with the fake code

The first incident involved the abandonment of a sofa in the city center. A peculiar scam attempt: a counterfeit collection code had been applied to the furniture to simulate a legitimate reservation.

The report, initially circulated on social media, triggered checks by the Urban Hygiene Office. By reviewing surveillance footage, officers quickly identified the person responsible, who was subsequently fined heavily, while the bulky waste was removed and disposed of.

Caught by camera traps in Via Botteghelle

Even more serious was the second incident recorded on Via Botteghelle, where camera traps placed by environmental surveillance captured a man in the act of unloading dozens of black bags containing various materials.

The use of black bags, expressly prohibited by current waste separation regulations, aroused the suspicions of environmental inspectors: the area was immediately seized and the person responsible was reported to the Prosecutor's Office for environmental crimes.

The institutions' appeal to citizens

"The message is very simple: in San Giorgio a Cremano, there is no longer any room for those who think they can litter and get away with it," commented Mayor Michele Carbone, praising the Urban Hygiene staff and Environment Councilor Luisa Mirabelli. The mayor then noted that the video surveillance system's coverage is part of a comprehensive strategy, appealing to the community: "I urge anyone who notices such uncivilized behavior to promptly report it to the dedicated numbers (081 5654202 or 081 5654250).
