Waste burning in San Giuseppe Vesuviano: ARPAC begins air quality checks

San Giuseppe Vesuviano – Environmental monitoring has begun in the Vesuvian area following the fire that broke out yesterday afternoon, August 9th, inside the municipal waste collection center in Vasca al Pianillo, San Giuseppe Vesuviano.

The flames, which mainly affected brushwood and several plastic bins intended for separate waste collection, were extinguished within about two hours thanks to the timely intervention of the Fire Brigade.

To assess the potential risks to public health and the atmospheric impact, technicians from the Naples department of ARPAC (Campania Regional Agency for Environmental Protection) conducted two separate inspections. During the first intervention, the fire was extinguished, although some residual fumaroles were still visible; the situation stabilized completely this morning, when even the secondary smoke completely disappeared.

This morning, the Agency installed a high-flow sampler near the site to begin monitoring airborne micropollutants: levels of dioxins, furans, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are being monitored. The results of the laboratory tests will be published in the coming days on the agency's official website (arpacampania.it).
