High levels of concern remain along the coastline between Licola and Varcaturo, where residents and swimmers are reporting sudden changes in water quality. They report stretches of clear sea alternate with periods of murky, brown water, making bathing difficult or impossible.
The case was brought to the attention of Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli through eyewitness accounts and photographic material collected along the coast. According to some reports, sea conditions could change within a matter of hours.
"We remembered last year's clear water, and even recently there were moments of clear water, but suddenly the situation has worsened, with muddy, impassable water," say some locals. "It's unacceptable to pay for beach services without knowing for sure whether it's safe to swim: we need constant checks on the functioning of the purification plants."
Another report, accompanied by images, describes the presence of dark water and jellyfish carcasses along the shoreline. "The sea rapidly changes from clear to completely cloudy. We suspect anomalous spills, drainage problems, or periodic openings of the mouth of Lago Patria and the canals, which are discharging mud and debris. Continuous monitoring is needed to clarify the origin of these intermittent episodes," the complaint states.
Borrelli intervened in the matter, announcing that he would request inspections by the relevant authorities. "The intermittent phenomenon could be a sign of anomalies in the management of the sewage treatment plants, of maneuvers at the sea outlets, or of illegal discharges occurring at certain times of the day. We cannot allow beachgoers and tourism operators to live at the mercy of these uncertainties," he stated.
The MP has asked ARPAC, the Port Authority, and local authorities to conduct strict inspections, conduct water sampling, and conduct checks on the entire network of drains and canals in the area. The goal is to determine the source of the reported changes and intervene, should irregularities arise, to protect public health and the coastline.
