The funeral of the Pesacane boss will be held in private: the Police Commissioner and the Prefect will take a hard line after the Libera protest.

Boscoreale—The funeral of Franchino Pesacane, a figure believed to be at the top of organized crime in the Vesuvian area, will not be held publicly. The decision, made by the Naples Police Headquarters to hold the funeral in Boscoreale, received the full and unwavering support of the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, who emphasized the need to ensure public order and safety.

The reasons for the measure

"The funeral will be held exclusively in private. I fully support the measure adopted by the Police Commissioner," stated the Prefect of Bari. Beyond the strictly public order aspects, the authorities' intervention responds to the need to prevent the ceremony from becoming a stage for criminal activity. As the Prefect clarified, the Public Security Authority's assessment must take into account the risk that a public event might serve as "exposition, celebration, or social legitimation" for individuals historically linked to Camorra organizations rooted in the area.

The intervention of civil society

The Libera Campania network had also intervened firmly in the matter, having raised strong concerns and protests the previous evening over the possibility of a public funeral for a leading figure of the Vesuvian clans. The association founded by Don Luigi Ciotti reiterated once again the importance of preventing the funerals of prominent criminal figures from becoming demonstrations of the clan's power over the local community.

The boundary between private mourning and legality

The measure, however, ensures a balance between respect for personal grief and the protection of legality. "The decision to allow private funerals guarantees the right of family members to grieve and provide a dignified burial for their loved one, while preventing the funeral from becoming a moment of public gathering," reiterated the Prefect of Bari, summarizing the state's position: "The private grief of family members is protected, but death cannot be allowed to become an occasion for public celebration for those who have chosen to place themselves outside the law."
