Accident at the PPG silos in Caivano: the Rescue Coordination Center has been activated to monitor air quality.

Following the release of volatile substances from two silos at the PPG Industries plant in Caivano, local authorities adopted precautionary measures for the population and organized joint inspections to assess the environmental impact.

An accident that occurred on the evening of September 12th at the PPG Industries plant in Caivano caused volatile substances to leak from two silos, generating a pungent odor that was perceived in several neighboring municipalities. In response to the emergency, this morning the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, called an urgent meeting of the Emergency Coordination Center (CCS) to coordinate management and control activities.

In addition to the Prefect, the operational roundtable was attended by institutional representatives, including the Mayor of Caivano, Antonio Angelino, the commanders of the Fire Brigade, the directors of ARPAC and the competent Local Health Authorities, representatives of the Ministry of the Interior for the Land of Fires, as well as law enforcement and the 118 emergency service. The meeting also included the Prefecture of Caserta and the Local Health Authorities for the Agro Aversano area, following reports from local municipalities.

The initial interventions of the Fire Department, together with company safety technicians, allowed the affected area to be secured, promptly containing the dispersion. As a precaution, local mayors recommended that residents limit their outings, keep doors and windows closed, and, if necessary, use FFP2 masks to protect themselves from potential exposure.

To rule out any residual risks, a joint inspection has been scheduled at the PPG plant, involving technicians from ARPAC (National Agency for the Prevention of Pollution) and the Local Health Authority (ASL), the Fire Department's NBCR team, and law enforcement. The objective is to assess environmental conditions and air quality in detail. The Emergency Coordination Center continues to closely monitor the situation, ensuring constant monitoring and updates to the authorities and the public.
