A social media exchange between Gionta's sister and the priest
Naples and Torre Annunziata are once again embroiled in a tension that links the Camorra's bloody past with new criminal activity. Rekindling the fuse, this time within the virtual confines of social media, is a long-distance head-on clash between the family of boss Valentino Gionta and the anti-Camorra church, against the backdrop of a region dealing with recent raids, open feuds, and judicial ghosts.
The point of contention is a debate that arose over the figure of Giancarlo Siani, the Il Mattino reporter murdered by the Camorra on September 23, 1985. Carmela Gionta, sister of longtime clan leader Valentino Gionta, vented her annoyance and intolerance for the victim's enduring memory in a social media comment, responding sharply to a post published by Don Ciro Cozzolino—a priest and former Libera representative in Torre Annunziata.
"You always say the same things, you're annoying... you and Giancarlo Siani, you never keep those mouths shut," the woman wrote, revealing the clan's intolerance for the reporter's civil memory. The parish priest's response was immediate, clear, and unhesitating, with a laconic but peremptory: "Never." The news, previewed by Ilcorriere.it, sparked a wave of controversy.
The controversy unfolds within a complex judicial and historical context. Valentino Gionta, currently detained under the 41-bis regime, was previously at the center of a long and troubled legal case related to the Siani murder, from which he was ultimately acquitted of the charge of instigating the journalist's murder. Despite the sentences, the Gionta family's name continues to weigh heavily on the collective memory of the Castellammare di Stabia-Torrese area.
But crime news demands that we also look to the present. The social media controversy is intertwined with the recent investigative upheavals recorded last week in the Vesuvian area. A raid by the Naples Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office decimated the criminal ranks, but the boss's namesake nephew—Valentino Gionta Jr.—managed to escape the precautionary custody order issued by the investigating judge.
The young scion is currently untraceable and a hotbed of law enforcement. His escape is part of the recent heated mini-feud that erupted over control of the territory and illicit trafficking against the rival Fourth System clan, a war of organized crime characterized by raids, ambushes, and intimidation that demonstrates how the mafia peace in Torre Annunziata remains fragile and precarious.
