Damage caused by bad weather
The orange weather alert remains in effect until 3:00 PM today for many areas of Campania, including Naples and the Gulf Islands. Schools remain closed in 46 municipalities. Since the early hours of this morning, severe thunderstorms have continued to affect much of the province of Naples, following the damage and disruption caused yesterday by severe weather.
In the northern part of the capital, trees fell, sinkholes opened, and flooding occurred. Some people trapped in cars were rescued by firefighters. A tree was uprooted in the Vomero district.
Yesterday afternoon, at the Government Palace, the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, convened a new meeting of the Rescue Coordination Center regarding the violent storm that hit the metropolitan area, particularly Arzano, Grumo Nevano, Giugliano, and Casandrino. Flooding, fallen trees, sinkholes, and power outages were the focus of the discussion.
The mayors of Arzano and Casandrino, the prefectural commissioner of Grumo Nevano, the director general of the Campania Region's Civil Protection Department, the commander of the Giugliano local police, and representatives of the Unified Regional Operations Room, the fire department, and the police force attended the meeting, which also covered the evening. Firefighters and Civil Protection officials were present, along with the mayors of Casandrino and Arzano, among the hardest-hit areas.
In Arzano, the outages at electrical substations, which had also affected District 42 of the Naples 2 North Local Health Authority, have been restored. E-Distribuzione intervened to ensure a regular power supply, including in the industrial area.
In the industrial area, heavy flooding, both inside and outside the warehouses, required the intervention of the fire brigade and an extraordinary intervention on the sewer systems ordered by the mayor.
In Grumo Nevano, the collapse of a municipal road, immediately closed to traffic, prompted firefighters, after a technical inspection, to order the precautionary evacuation of a family home. Municipal social services have assisted the family with alternative accommodations, pending restoration and safety measures. E-Distribuzione is also restoring some power supplies that had been interrupted by the storm.
In Giugliano, the flooding on Via Madonna del Pantano required the intervention of the fire department and the regional Civil Protection. Two teams and two pumping stations allowed the water to drain.
In Casandrino, the flooding of the Pontino Riverbed caused the road surface to collapse on several municipal roads, which were immediately closed to traffic. The mayor reported that discussions are already underway with the Campania Region to resolve the issue and that collaboration on this issue will be intensified.
The situation continues to be monitored.
