Castellammare, investigation into the death of a 33-year-old mother and the 7-month-old baby she was carrying.

A new judicial investigation and the tears of an entire community have once again hit the San Leonardo Hospital in Castellammare di Stabia. The investigation, launched by the Torre Annunziata Public Prosecutor's Office and conducted by officers from the Stabia Police Station, will be aimed at ridding the veil of mystery surrounding the death of Greta Astarita, 33, originally from Piano di Sorrento, and the seven-month-old baby girl she was carrying.

A devastating double tragedy unfolding in the darkness of a hospital corridor, coming just three days after the sensational judicial upheaval culminating in the arrest of former head of gynecology, Eutelia Esposito, who was at the center of an investigation into the death of a newborn baby in the delivery room two years ago.

The sequence of events, cold and merciless in its temporal contours, begins on a Friday evening like any other. Greta is seven months pregnant with her second child. A young son is already waiting for her at home. Suddenly, a sharp pain in her groin and abnormal swelling in her legs shatter the domestic tranquility.

Alarmed by the advanced stage of her pregnancy, the woman decides to rely on medical help: her family rushes her to the emergency room at San Leonardo, where she is immediately transferred to the Gynecology department for routine checks.

The first access, the discharge and the worsening of the clinical picture

According to an initial, summary reconstruction of the facts, the on-call clinicians subjected the thirty-three-year-old to the necessary instrumental and clinical tests, discharging her shortly thereafter. The initial medical assessment revealed no evidence that would raise a red flag or suggest imminent danger to the mother or fetus.

Greta thus returns home, convinced that she can dismiss her discomfort as a common, temporary ailment.
But time, mocking and tyrannical, flies by. Barely two hours after her discharge, the situation escalates irreversibly. Greta feels a sudden collapse, a sudden illness that causes her to lose consciousness.

The house turns into a theater of despair: the family calls 118. When the ambulance returns to San Leonardo, the woman's condition is already desperate. The medical staff makes desperate attempts to resuscitate her, but the worst news arrives soon after: the baby Greta is carrying is dead.

A few hours later, despite being urgently transferred to the intensive care unit and intubated, the thirty-three-year-old's heart stopped beating forever.

The Wall of Pain and the Demand for Justice

The family, locked in a deafening silence and torn by grief, refuses to accept an inexplicable fate and calls for immediate answers. The voices of the relatives are joined by those of local and regional institutions.

The mayor of Piano di Sorrento, Salvatore Cappiello, expressed the dismay of a city cut off:
There is news we never want to hear, news that leaves our community stunned and bewildered. The tragic and sudden passing of our young fellow citizen and the baby she was carrying is an immense pain that breaks all of our hearts. The entire community joins in a respectful silence and a united prayer.

Along the same lines, the speeches of MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli and regional councilor Carlo Ceraparano got straight to the point:

We demand that the management of San Leonardo Hospital and the top management of ASL Napoli 3 Sud immediately launch a rigorous and transparent internal investigation to verify everything that happened. The family and the citizens have an indisputable right to the truth.

The questions of the investigation

At this time, preliminary clinical information does not allow us to definitively establish a direct causal link between the initial hospital admission, the subsequent discharge, and the tragic outcome, nor to make any definitive assessments of the medical staff's actions. However, the coincidence of this death with the recent investigation that rocked the gynecology department of the same hospital in Castellammare di Stabia has exponentially increased media and judicial attention.

The prosecutor's investigators will have to shed light on three fundamental issues:

  • The accuracy of the triage and initial diagnosis: verify whether the symptoms Greta presented at first admission (groin pain and leg swelling, potential indicators of thromboembolic events or gestosis) were underestimated.
  • Timing and methods of care: analyze the medical records to understand exactly what happened in the two hours between discharge and the fatal illness at home.
  • The rescue chain and crisis management: assess whether, upon returning to the hospital in already compromised conditions, all lifesaving measures appropriate to the severity of the clinical situation were promptly activated.

In Piano di Sorrento, only disbelief remains. The community gathers around a husband and a young child left alone, waiting for the autopsy and judicial investigation to identify those responsible for a double death that cries out for justice.
