The storm currently hitting Campania continues to dump heavy rainfall, creating a severe hydrogeological crisis. Given the rainfall recorded over the last 72 hours and the persistent risks associated with soil saturation, the Campania Region Civil Protection Department has officially extended the current weather alert until 15:00 PM tomorrow.
The weather—characterized by showers and locally intense thunderstorms—will continue to affect the entire region today, gradually easing as the evening progresses. Starting at 15:00 PM today, the areas previously under the Orange alert are expected to be upgraded to the Yellow level.
Risks in the area: landslides, floods and post-fire areas
The warning issued by the Joint Operations Room to the Municipalities highlights the multiple dangers associated with ground impact. Among the main risks are:
Flooding and overflowing of watercourses, with possible exceeding of water levels.
Runoff and rapid flow of water along roads.
Rockfalls and landslides linked to the natural fragility of the soil.
Maximum caution is recommended in areas already affected by fires in recent months and in areas where soil saturation has drastically reduced drainage capacity. The competent authorities are urged to maintain the Municipal Operations Centers (COCs) active and to promptly implement the planned civil protection measures.
The Naples area is paying the highest price in terms of infrastructure, hit by exceptionally severe weather. On the state highway 7 Quater "Domitiana," in the municipality of Giugliano in Campania, the situation remains critical in the stretch between Varcaturo and Lago Patria, currently flooded and closed to traffic.
Since the early hours of yesterday, Anas teams—operating through contractors—have been working with numerous tankers to remove the water that had accumulated on the road surface, much of it coming from the nearby Via Ripuaria (under municipal jurisdiction). This relentless operation, which continued through the night, was abruptly interrupted this morning by another violent downpour that caused a new overflow from the adjacent municipal road.
Given the extraordinary nature of the event and the involvement of multiple local authorities and administrations, Anas is working closely with the Naples Prefecture and the Fire Department. The primary objective remains to complete the cleanup and safety operations on the road, essential to reopening the stretch as quickly as possible.
