Rome. "The reaffirmation of power" by the Senese. This, according to Antonio Del Greco, is behind the bombs planted in Rome in recent months, 11 in about three months starting last August.
Del Greco, a former State Police officer, after his initial assignments at the Milan police headquarters, served as head of the Homicide Unit. Among his other roles, he handled the case of Pietro De Negri, the "Magliana Gangster," who brutally murdered a former amateur boxer in 1988; the murder of Simonetta Cesaroni, killed in the building on Via Poma in 1990; Johnny the Gypsy; and the Magliana Gang. Currently the operations director of Italpol, with Massimo Lugli he has written "City at Armed Hand," "The Magliana Gangster," "The Bad Guys," "The Via Poma Mystery," "Capital Hell," "The Baby Killer of the Magliana Gang," "Goodfellas of Circeo," and "The Girl from the Vatican." What Happened to Emanuela?
Regarding the events of recent weeks, the bombings carried out in various areas of Rome, Del Greco has a clear idea: "I'd start with the latest, the attack on Via dei Platani, at the Costantino brothers' car rental company. They had already been the target of a previous attack, I believe about a year or a year and a half ago. Calderon, accused of killing Fabrizio Piscitelli, and Peppe Molisso, considered one of the colonels of the Senese clan, were arrested for the attack."
The former head of the Homicide unit starts from this case and connects "a bit with the vast majority, because probably not everyone is on the same wavelength," explaining how it is "a signal to those who think that, with the arrest of Senese and his colonels from Montespaccato to the Rome South quadrant, let's say there was a power vacuum, so other individuals in my opinion, let's say the most violent group in the Lazio sector, want to take back a little of that market share that Fabrizio Piscitelli had 'laboriously' conquered." And the signal, in Del Greco's opinion, "going a bit against the grain, is the opposite, in the sense that it is the Senese group that, to reaffirm its power, carried out this type of intimidation against those who, evidently, had espoused the other cause." Therefore "a sort of reaffirmation of power" that "I believe is still in the hands of those individuals."
Speaking of Michele Senese, 'o pazzo, a leading member of the Camorra, one of the most powerful in Rome, a photo from 2013 portrays him in a discussion with Massimo Carminati.
The latter, Del Greco explains, "played power for years, a criminal power of a political nature. In reality, he was one of the most violent associates in the Magliana gang." But then "he evidently began a different, more lucrative and, in his opinion, less risky life, that of the underworld, which involved him in that investigation with other figures linked to a completely different world, that of the cooperatives. So, in this context, left and right get along well when it comes to crime that pays."
Senese, Del Greco continues, "is certainly an important figure" and "according to my informants, according to what I already know about the area, also because he's not a novice, so he's a figure who already had a certain amount of clout during my time in the Flying Squad, he extorts a bit of everyone, not just simple shopkeepers, but even criminal gangs who commit specific robberies, let's say, or in any case, major thefts, or who deal in drugs, are forced to pay a sort of protection money to this man." For Del Greco, "this was also one of the reasons why Fabrizio Piscitelli, the Diabolik, was killed."
