The place where the worker was found and in the frame Salvatore Calignano
Friday began like any other day for Salvatore Calignano, a 61-year-old construction worker living in Orta di Atella (Caserta). Around 1:00 PM, he called his wife, Carmela, to reassure her: he was busy with maintenance and installing insulation on the roof of an industrial warehouse in Caivano, near Naples.
A few hours later, the situation escalated. Around 3:00 PM, an anonymous call alerted 118 reporting a seriously injured man on Via Fossa del Lupo, a remote and remote area of Caivano. Rescuers found Calignano lying on the asphalt with devastating multiple injuries consistent with a fall from a great height.
Before losing consciousness, he managed to tell paramedics that he had fallen from a ladder. He was rushed to Giugliano Hospital and then transferred to Ospedale del Mare in Naples. Unfortunately, the 61-year-old died on Saturday evening.
The North Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the circumstances of the incident and the cause of death, which has been entrusted to the Carabinieri. At the heart of the investigation is a circumstance described as anomalous by the family, who have consulted with lawyer Francesco Petruzzi: Calignano was employed by a company in Caivano on Thursday, October 1st, just twenty-four hours before the fatal accident.
His wife, Carmela, was completely unaware of this new job, especially since he had been regularly receiving unemployment benefits in September. "The fact that he was hired immediately before the tragic event seems strange to us," emphasizes attorney Petruzzi. "The Carabinieri will shed light on this matter. At the moment, we have serious doubts."
The hypothesis being examined by investigators is that the investigation is a possible undeclared accident, attempted to be concealed or rectified ex post through an emergency contractual regularization, aggravated by the despicable decision to pick up the injured worker and abandon him on the street in order to clean up the construction site.
The incident has sparked a wave of institutional and union outrage. "We must shed full light on the death of Salvatore Calignano, abandoned like a dog. A country where the lives of workers count for nothing is not a civilized one," thundered Arturo Scotto, Democratic Party group leader in the Labor Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.
Strong condemnation also came from the Campania unions. "We feel a mixture of anger and grief for yet another life lost," said Nicola Ricci, general secretary of the CGIL Naples and Campania, announcing the organization's civil action in the upcoming trial. "Strict controls are needed." Melicia Comberiati, general secretary of the CISL Naples, echoed this sentiment: "Construction sites must be places of production and the future, not scenes of avoidable tragedy."
While awaiting the autopsy, which will be performed midweek to determine the exact cause of death, the Prosecutor's Office is analyzing the computerized data from the contract registration. The excruciating pain of a family now demands justice and truth for a life taken too soon remains.
