"As May 1st approaches, yet more victims have been reported less than 24 hours after Labor Day , and we find ourselves having to acknowledge two more workplace tragedies. This is a veritable massacre in the face of which it is intolerable to speak of a fatality. Workplace safety is a fundamental right for every worker; this massacre is no longer acceptable. Dying on the job violates the very right to life. We must act promptly to prevent these tragedies."
Harsh is the comment of the Regional Secretary of Ugl Campania, Luigi Marino in reference to the two tragic accidents that both occurred in Campania, in the province of Naples. A 60-year-old worker Vincenzo Coppola, lost his life in a construction site in viale dei Tigli in Casalnuovo, another worker Raffaele Manzo, 57 years old, died in Lettere. The victim fell from the third floor of a building around which a construction site was being set up. The accident occurred in via Depugliano.
"The Ugl Campania - adds Marino - joins the pain of the families and loudly reiterates the need to stop this whirlwind of tragedies that is affecting our country. The safety of workers, regardless of the sector, must be an absolute priority for all of us! It is more urgent than ever to promote a real culture of safety at work, expanding training and education starting from secondary schools. As Ugl Campania we will continue to monitor and carry on, relentlessly, the battle against the phenomenon of so-called accidental deaths. We must diligently intensify checks on the workplace, focusing on the coordination of databases to strengthen prevention against accidents at work, involving all social and employer parties to increase investments in safety. As os - concludes Marino - we make our own the appeal launched by the President of the Italian Republic by sharing, that it is not a commodity, we cannot accept a drip of deaths. Work is inextricably linked to the person, to his dignity, to his social dimension, to the contribution that each person can and must make to participating in the life of society”.
