Port of Pozzuoli: safety at risk, truck drivers in turmoil

Truck drivers in the Gulf of Naples are in turmoil over the increasingly critical operating conditions at the port of Pozzuoli and fear for their safety.

The phenomenon of bradyseism, which has caused the docks to rise several centimetres, makes the embarkation and disembarkation operations of ferries headed for Ischia and Procida complicated and dangerous.

New Atec, an association representing numerous transporters and traders on the islands, today sent a letter to the relevant institutions, including the Special Commissioner for Operations in the Phlegraean Fields, the Prefect of Naples, the Campania Region, and the Maritime Authority of Pozzuoli . The document highlights the difficulties caused by the rising soil, which particularly hinders heavy vehicles in loading and unloading operations, especially during low tide.

The haulers denounce the failure to use the regional funds announced last April for the installation of two pontoons, a solution that could have improved the safety and efficiency of port operations. Despite requests, including that of the Port Authority, the work has never started.

The association has asked for urgent interventions to resolve the situation, threatening, in case of further delays, to suspend transport activity. A decision that would have serious consequences for the supply of goods to the islands, worsening an already complex situation.

The issue is now on the table of the institutions, called to intervene to guarantee the safety and regular functioning of the port.
