Online scams in Avellino and Naples: Six people reported by the Carabinieri

Share

Patiently constructed online scams and expertly executed cyber-scams. This is the picture emerging from two investigations conducted by the Carabinieri of the Montella branch, in the province of Avellino, which led to the filing of charges against six individuals held responsible, to varying degrees, for conspiracy to commit fraud.

The first incident stemmed from a complaint filed by a woman living in the area who had begun an online relationship with a man using false information. The online relationship, fueled by messages and promises, gradually evolved into a plea for financial assistance. The man, after gaining the victim's trust, allegedly discussed alleged financial problems, convincing her to make several bank transfers with the promise of repaying the money.

Carabinieri from the Montella station began their investigation, reconstructing the bank transactions and identifying the accounts into which the funds were transferred. The investigation led to the filing of charges against four individuals residing in the province of Caserta, believed to be involved in managing the accounts used to collect the money. The total amount stolen from the victim is approximately five thousand euros.

The second case involves a cyber fraud against the owner of a betting shop. The investigation was triggered by a complaint filed by the shopkeeper after he noticed anomalies in the gaming system.

According to the Carabinieri of the Montemarano station, the victim had been contacted by phone by people posing as technicians carrying out updates to the lottery's IT systems. Using this pretext, the scammers allegedly obtained the platform's login credentials.

Shortly thereafter, two transfers of €1.800 each were made from the gaming systems to gaming accounts linked to the suspects. In this case, too, investigators were able to reconstruct the flow of funds and identify the perpetrators. Two people residing in the province of Naples have been reported to the judicial authorities.

Investigations confirm once again that online scams and computer fraud remain among the most widespread and insidious crimes, often constructed by exploiting the trust of victims or their lack of familiarity with digital systems.
